URLs for SEO - the supreme discipline

The most important link is your URL - that is, the address of your homepage. This is because search engines read websites in search of relevant search terms in descending order from top to bottom. First they evaluate the URL name, then the headings and subheadings, then the body text. Therefore, it is considered the supreme discipline to place your central keyword directly in the URL.

How to find the right keyword for your URL

In the best case, select a keyword that relatively many people are searching for. At the same time, this keyword should appear relatively rarely in the URLs of your competitors. This gives you the highest chance of landing at the top of the search engine results list. You can test for yourself whether your competitors are already using your keyword in their URLs. To do this, enter the word combination inurl: in the Google search box and then add your keyword (without spaces).

You can find out whether a keyword is often searched for using special search engine optimization programmes such as ubersuggest, SemRush, Keywords Everywhere or KWFinder check. This is recommended so that you also choose a keyword that your target group actually uses.

Checklist for a good URL:

- contains the central keyword of the homepage
- is as short as possible and still describes the content of the page
- individual words are separated with hyphens (instead of underscores)
- the URL name should only consist of lower case letters
- The keyword contained has a high search volume and rarely appears in the URLs of the competitors.

Search engines as well as readers will see at first glance from your URL that they will find exactly what they are looking for on your homepage!
